Recap: Coyote Hills Half Marathon 2014

I registered for this half marathon as a birthday present to myself but I managed to run 0 times in the four preceding weeks. At my first half, there was wine tasting at the finish. At this one, there were Its-it ice cream sandwiches. I’d like to thank my high school English teachers for the ability to see the foreshadowing on this one.

7AM – Wake up. Do I need sunscreen? Nahhhhh
8AM – Oops. Should have left twenty minutes ago.
8:15AM – Is that the line for the shuttle?
8:18AM – Is THAT the line for the shuttle!?!?!?
8:36AM – Welp. I’m going to be late. – wait, half-marathoners to the front?
8:47AM – ohgodohgodohgodregisterwhereistheregistrationbooth
8:59AM – Thank goodness, I’m at the start. … …I need to pee.

Later I found out there’d been coffee at the start on which I’d missed out. Darn!
Here’s a rundown of my thoughts during the race:

Mile 1 This course is too crowded. All these people are passing me. It’s okay, I’m in it for the long haul.

Mile 2 I haven’t even run two miles yet? That’s okay, that’s okay, remember that you like miles 4-8 best. And remember how great you felt miles 9-13 in your marathon? You’re gooooood

Mile 5 Excuse me, is there a bathroom on the course? No? Hahahahahaha
Mile 6 I need to pee.

Mile 8 Miles 4-8 were NOT my good miles, and that water and those oreos that I’ve been refusing at the aid stations are starting to look very, very good.
Mile 9 Can I walk?
Mile 10 Walking is fun.
Mile 11 Am I having a mini picnic with water, oreos, and kettle chips? Yes, yes I am.

Mile 12 Okay now both of my calves are cramping up something fierce and each time they seize up, I stumble, so yup I’m continuing to walk.

Like I said, they had Its-it ice cream sandwiches, among other things.

Body check-in:
Chafing: None.
Sun Damage: None visible, little/no tan lines despite no sun block. Thank you winter sun.
Injuries: None. Both of my knees were feeling something, but they were okay.
Soreness: Very sore the two following days, though it didn’t help I went horseback riding the day after. This time I actually got the massage races usually have at their finish lines which I think really helped out my calves.

Take-away:
For the love of [anything], do your freaking training. Just do it.*

Recap: Warrior Dash Norcal 2011

So… this wasn’t really a “race.” It was more like a “fun event” with “running.” I ran this with my friends, and we would wait after every obstacle until everyone was through, so… haha.

The mud pit was REALLY fun. The mud was thick enough so that you felt superbly buoyant, but thin enough so that you could still swim in it.

However, to be honest, I think I’ll go for Tough Mudder next time. I was rather unimpressed by the challenges. Even though, for example, I tried to make it harder for myself by singing Disney songs loudly during the run (simultaneous singing and moving is actually quite difficult) and high-kneeing it through the tires and cars, I pretty much felt nothing. The hardest part was the hotspots on my feet (potential blisters) because of running in wet shoes, though the shoes were also my friend’s pair of old converse (too big for me, had holes, etc.).

Actually, the real challenge was getting clean.  There were so many people and they basically had one large communal shower coming out of a fire truck.  One.  Sprinkler.  It was like showering in the middle of a really cold, wet, dirty concert, which is so many times more difficult when you only come up to people’s chests and don’t have a cellphone.

This was fun though!  My takeaway is that training for the marathon has made me so much stronger, and that once I figure out where I’m going to be after college, I’ll be signing up for Tough Mudder.

Recap: Morgan Hill Marathon 2011

So… I finally did it! There’s so much to cover, but I want to get this recap done in a reasonable period of time, so it’s going to be imperfect.

pre-race
2:xxAM – ask myself why I am still awake. Go to bed.
4:45 – woken by alarm. Fall back asleep.
5:20 – Dad is outside and waiting. SHIII-
5:25 – stumble into car. Sleep.
6:30 – stumble out of car. Shiver because it’s freezing and I had < 3 hours of sleep.

I had my bib mailed ahead of time, which made things more convenient but took out some of the anticipation for waiting to see what my race number would be. There was no food or coffee beforehand! Everything was dark and freezing. I applied many, many layers of sunblock. My dad told me I still had streaks of it on my face, which only induced me to apply more at the last minute (literally), in an effort to create a mask.

Spoiler: It got hot quickly.

Miles 1-10
These miles were heavenly. I talked to people, complimented people on their outfits, waved at people. I smiled at the volunteers, and helped the 4:40 pacer hold her backpack (with her pacing sign stuck in it!) while she fiddled with something. Eventually I ran past her because she was using the Galloway run/walk method. I caught up to and passed the 4:25 pacers. It was hard holding myself back… I felt awesomez!!

Miles 10-15
I was starting to feel a little bit fatigued, but not badly. I did end up thinking that it would’ve been wonderful to be running the half because I’d be done already. Started getting hot. Started drinking water. My ankle started whining a little bit, and the camber and hills of the road were getting bothersome.

Miles 16-20
Oh god. It was so hot. I began taking two waters and a gatorade at every water stop. I checked my iPod for the time for the first time – damn, I could make 4:30 with time to spare!

Miles 20-22
I don’t quite remember this. So hot. Crap. Was too hot and tired to care. Panicked a little bit about heart damage due to undertraining, after I’d already promised myself not to panic about such things.

Miles 23-24
So much walking. Everything just kind of fell apart. I felt like I’d forgotten how to run. I’d try, and my feet would pick up for twenty seconds, and then turn into a shuffle. Actually though, I really wasn’t even that tired – it was just that the walking felt so damn good that I couldn’t stop. The 4:25 pacers passed me.

One of the medics drove past me, yelled out, “are you okay?” and then drove backwards and yelled again, “are you okay?!” Whoops. I guess my miserable-face looked a lot more miserable than everyone else’s.

Also along here, there were two young people holding a small pitcher of ICE-COLD water (the water everywhere else had long turned lukewarm). We were running through a residential area, they weren’t wearing volunteering shirts, and they didn’t have one of those water booths.. I thought they were ANGELS. ANGELS. I hope they could hear the desperate thankfulness in my voice when I accepted a cup of water from them.

Also got pissed because the cop doing traffic for the marathon held me for at LEAST seven seconds… which means the thing should really say 4:37:xx. :/ Or I could’ve not been a lazyass.

Mile 25
It turns out I still did have energy in my legs, because I ran this whole last part. :| I did cramp up pretty badly in my stomach, and started groaning, but I was definitely moving.

They had towels soaked in ice cold water for us to put around our necks because it was effing hot.

Body check-in:
Chafing: I only chafed in the tramp stamp area. All SOFFE shorts have a ridge underneath the label in this area and I have a small red stripe there.
Sun Damage: None visible. I put on a LOT of sunblock. I actually didn’t end up with any tan lines!
Injuries: My right ankle has been messed up ever since I severely sprained it in second grade. I could barely walk on Monday, and it’s still a little swollen today (Friday). I don’t know what’s wrong. Tendinitis?
Soreness: Barely anything the following week… I clearly didn’t try hard enough.

Reflections:
I should’ve run faster. I had no blisters, no major injuries (although my wonky right ankle was complaining), and was in a good place for my “womanly cycles.”
The support was amazing. I’m smiling in my finish line photo because a female spectator was cheering me on to go faster because the guy behind me was getting close to passing.
I’m really glad I did this, but I remember distinctly thinking around miles 20-26: “WHAT. THE. WHAT. WERE YOU THINKING. UGH. JUST MAKE IT STOP.”
So.. I’m not sure whether I should do the Grizzly Peak marathon in April (hint: Grizzly PEAK). Because I won’t be able to finish that one in 4:30, which will make me all sorts of depressed. Though it would make me stronger for another one down the road…
Right, so I’d said I’d be happy with any time under 5:00, but yeah, I am so not happy with my time. I could feeeeel the sub-4:30, it was right there, and I just gave up! MUST. IMPROVE!!!!!!

Recap: Berkeley and Oakland Hills Street Scramble 2011

Yesterday was my first urban orienteering event! I did it with three of my floormates from my first year. And I have to say that after doing this event with them, it’s really dawned on me how special they are to me :). (Not just because not anyone would be down for waking up before 8 on a Saturday to run around for three hours).

We got there right when registration opened and got to planning right away. I’ve been so used to people who just sit back and let others do the work; team KAFKA, though, was here to win. ;)

WE WON FIRST PLACE!! (in our division). Unfortunately not overall. Part of it was that this was our first time and a group of four is unwieldy; the other part was that we wasted over a third of our time to get a measly 60 points (our overall score was 500). You see, there was one 60-pointer and we foolishly went for it, not taking seriously the topographic wiggles that were radiating from that point.

It was a long, STEEP, climb. Let me just say this: nobody else did the 60-pointer.

At that point, we decided to stop running to win and to instead simply enjoy the view and experience. :)

Because the view was actually worth it.

Seriously the most amazing view I’ve seen in the Bay Area – obviously the picture doesn’t capture it very well, but we could see all of Berkeley and some of Oakland laid out, as well as the Bay, and … it was wonderful and worth the loss.

I was a little bit silly/naive/dumb and did my 20-miler the day before this event. I thought I’d be okay because I’d recovered within an hour for my 18-miler. Well… on the morning of the Street Scramble, I was still feeling the pain. I think the difference was that half of my 18-miler was done on the hilly trails, and possibly done slower. In any case, by the time we were done with our three hours, not only was I tired, but my toes and ankles were REALLY hurting, and I felt an unfamiliar twinge under my left heel.

What this pain meant was that I was allowed to pig out as much as I wanted. :)

I know it’s navel-gazing to take pictures of what you eat, but just look at how disgusting we were :)

We were quite pleased with our disgustingness. :D

SO WORTH IT! I can’t wait to do this with them again!
